By day, the Street Art Parc at Château de Candes is an open-air urban art museum: five hectares of listed parkland, over sixty works created on site by resident artists since 2019, century-old trees and traces of a Gallo-Roman settlement. By night, it's something else entirely. Every evening, the artworks are illuminated beneath the trees, and the park becomes one of the most singular experiences of a stay in the Loire Valley. Here's how to make the most of Street Art Parc at night, and who can visit once darkness falls.
What happens as dusk falls
In winter, night falls around 5 o'clock. The lights come on over the frescoes, sculptures and installations scattered throughout the paths: the arena fresco taken over by Topaz, the blue container, the long painted wall, the van, the panels lined up beneath the trees. The rest of the park remains in shadow, and it's this contrast that creates the effect: you move from one artwork to another as if from room to room, in the silence of the confluence of the Loire and Vienne rivers, below.

Who can visit the park at night
The park has two types of visitors, and two sets of rules.
- Visitors are welcome from April to the end of December, every day from 9 am to 7 pm. In December, this leaves two hours of darkness, from 5 pm to 7 pm: the best idea is to arrive around 4.30 pm, see the park by day, then stay for the lights to come on.
- Château guests, meaning anyone who stays at the estate, enjoy free and unlimited access, day and night, included in their stay. After dinner, the park is theirs.
Guests of the Pressoir du Château, the estate's troglodytic restaurant, also have park access included: a half-hour stroll before dinner, between the lights coming on and the first service at 7 pm.
A suggested route, at night
Start from the park entrance, in front of the château, and follow the central avenue under the trees to the large murals. Turn right towards the old arena, unique in Touraine, whose origins remain unknown and whose walls have been claimed by artist Topaz. Return past the painted panels and the long wall, then finish at the château terrace, where you can see the lights of Candes-Saint-Martin and Montsoreau across the river. Allow forty-five minutes at a leisurely pace. Closed shoes are fine; the paths are earth and wood.
And why a gorilla
Along the way, you'll come across Moh, the château's bronze gorilla, sitting in the park in a contemplative pose. He has become the emblem of the estate, and the patron of its social media. Children search for him, and adults end up sitting beside him.

Photographing the park at night
The lighting is warm and directional: a recent smartphone is enough, as long as you keep still. Rest your device on a low wall or railing, turn off the flash, let night mode take its two or three-second exposure, and frame a work with a little sky or foliage around it to keep the depth. The best shots are taken in the half-hour after the lights come on, when the sky is still dark blue rather than black. And if you share it, the park likes to be credited: Street Art Parc, Château de Candes.
The rest of the evening
The park pairs beautifully with everything the estate offers in the evening. The Zen Garden Spa, with its heated pool at 28 °C, sauna, hammam carved into the tuffeau stone and outdoor hot tub at 38 °C, is included for two hours per night for guests, and can be booked for two hours at 48 € for visitors, Street Art Parc included. The Côté Loire Spa, a swimming corridor beneath a vaulted cellar and a Nordic bath overlooking the river, is available for private hire for one hour at 120 € (book online). And from Thursday to Sunday, Le Pressoir serves its candlelit dinner, which becomes the festive menu from 3 December to 3 January.
Summer Evenings
The park comes alive at night with its own season of shows. Each summer, the Street Art Parc Nocturnes bring together fire artists, dancers, musicians and jugglers, Tuesday after Tuesday, within the park's enchanting setting. The 2026 edition drew to a close at the end of summer; the next is scheduled for summer 2027. Between the two, the park illuminated each evening offers a quieter take on the same idea: art beneath the stars.
